Protomelas triaenodon

Protomelas triaenodon is mainly living in reasonable shallow intermediate zones from rocks to sand. Usually they are caught on a depth between 10 and 20 metres above an open sandbottom. This species can mainly be found in the southern part of the lake however they are also found in the neighbourhood of Liuli in the northern Tanzanian part of the lake. By this there´s a possibility that they are living on several other places in Lake Malawi.

The males of these species can grow to about 17 cm in the lake. In the aquarium however they can grow a little taller because of a good feeding. The males can then grow to about 18 cm, females grow to about 13 cm.

Protomelas triaenodon is a quiet, peaceful cichlid which can be hold best with multiple females in a large tank with a lot of swimming space and enough hiding places. It`s possible to keep them together with peaceful mbunas but it`s necessary there`s enough space for them.

In the lake they are probably feeding themselves with algae which they find on the spreaded lying rocks. In the aquarium they are comfortable with any food. They take everything they get offered, like spirulina pellets, mysis, artemia, cyclops and shrimp-peas mix.
